This vibrant mural on the side of Thai Orchid’s Kitchen was originally proposed as a MuralsDC project in 2013. However, after initial designs were reviewed, controversy grew. The arguments were partly about the nature of the artwork but more about ownership of the neighborhood. For many long-time residents, the public art represented the newcomers and change. The disputes led MuralsDC to drop the project, but neighborhood activists Maceo Thomas and Veronica Davis pursued a grant from the Kennedy Center and contributions from individual Ward 7 community members to fund the piece.
